Founded in 1988, Clearwater Hat Company built its reputation on crafting custom period and historical hats with an unwavering commitment to authenticity, quality, and artistry. At just fifteen years old, Leon Yoder began learning the trade under the guidance of the company’s founders, Bob and Kay Burton, developing both a passion for the craft and a dream of one day carrying the legacy forward.

In 2004, Leon stepped away from the workshop to serve his country in the United States Air Force. After twenty years of dedicated military service, retirement brought an unexpected and meaningful opportunity: the chance to purchase the company he had admired since his youth. Following the stewardship of Bob and Kay Burton and then Eliza Hatman, Clearwater Hat Company now begins a new chapter under Leon’s ownership.

Alongside his wife and business partner, Rachel, Leon is committed to honoring Clearwater’s long-standing traditions while expanding its future. Together, they are raising three children who share a strong focus on education, creativity, and community involvement.

The heart of Clearwater’s craftsmanship also remains deeply rooted in family tradition. Leon’s mother, Nettie, has been an integral part of the company for more than thirty years, handcrafting carpet bags, sewing hat liners, and meticulously hand-stitching sweatbands and brim ribbons into each hat. Her dedication and expertise continue to help preserve the authenticity and attention to detail that customers have come to expect from Clearwater Hat Company.

With Leon’s lifelong connection to the craft, Nettie’s decades of experience, and Rachel’s passion and determination, the Yoder family is proud to continue the legacy established by Bob and Kay Burton and carried on by Eliza Hatman. Every piece produced by Clearwater Hat Company reflects a commitment to historical accuracy, individuality, and exceptional craftsmanship.
